I’ve got a joint tonight,
In my hand to light,
And I’ve got no place to go.
So I hop in my car,
And drive on down,
That long, dark, windy road.
Riding with no music,
I find rhythm,
In the swinging of my keys.
Without a light in sight,
I search for meaning,
In the darkness and the trees.
So I said, “Dear God,
Won’t you show me a sign
So I can swallow my disbelief?”
Well he went down to the river,
And he caught me a fish,
Just to throw it out to the sea.
So he may be a good lord,
But I ain’t never seen that face in front of me.
Yes, he may be a good lord,
But I ain’t never seen his face in front of me.
We hit the road one night,
For the eastern side,
Of the kingly Mount Rainier.
Found a dank, dark forest,
Where the moon dances,
With the graceful, passing deer.
We ate those crusty shrooms,
And built a roaring fire,
Out of mossy sticks and leaves.
Searched for earthen wisdom,
In the depths,
At an icy mountain stream.
So I said, “Dear God,
Won’t you show me a sign
So I can swallow my disbelief?”
Well he went down to the river,
And he caught me a fish,
Just to throw it out to the sea.
So he may be a good lord,
But I ain’t never seen that face in front of me.
Yes he may be a good lord,
But I ain’t never seen his face in front of me.
Then it hit me one day,
Like a flash of lightning,
I had it all wrong you see.
In hunger I was blind,
I didn’t see all of the signs,
The fish all along was me.
My life was struggle and strife,
For I was going the wrong way,
My home is in the sea.
All I need do is stop,
And struggle no more,
And let the current carry me.
So I said, “Dear God,
Now you showed me a sign
So I could swallow my disbelief.”
Well you went down to the river,
And you caught me a fish,
Just to throw it out to the sea.
So he is a good lord,
And I’ve finally seen his face in front of me.
Yes he is a good lord,
And I’ve finally seen his face in front of me.
